I always recommend that new pupils take an initial introductory lesson with me. This lesson lasts for up to one hour and should be treated as a one-off. In other words it is your opportunity to learn a little about how the Alexander Technique works and to discover what Alexander hands-on work is like. You can read volumes about the Alexander Technique but nothing can compare with actually experiencing a lesson. At the end of this lesson you will know if you wish to take regular lessons with me. If you decide that the Technique is not for you, or that I am not the right teacher for you, then that is absolutely fine. I never assume that a new pupil will necessarily connect with the Alexander Technique want to move on to taking regular lessons. A Course of Lessons If you do decide that you would like to try further lessons then I usually recommend that new pupils come at least once a week for the first ten lessons if possible. This is because the Alexander Technique is unlike anything you have ever learned before and it takes a little while before most people understand the unique process of learning. I never ask or expect pupils to commit to a certain number of lessons but I do suggest that they make a commitment to themselves to take at least five lessons initially before reassessing whether or not they wish to continue. I do offer a discount for pupils booking a block of lessons, either ten or five at a time. For example, booking and paying for ten lessons in advance means that you get a 10% discount, the equivalent of one free lesson. Many pupils choose to do this, but it is entirely optional and you will certainly not be pressured to choose this route. A common question that new pupils ask is: "How many lessons will I need?" The official answer to this question is that it takes approximately 20 regular lessons before most pupils feel able to really work with the Technique in their daily lives. However learning the Alexander Technique is comparable to learning to play a musical instrument, so ask yourself this: "How many lessons does it take to learn to play a musical instrument?" Consequently I have pupils who take twenty to thirty lessons and then go away and I have pupils who have been taking lessons for several years. Some of those pupils now come monthly, some come irregularly. It is very variable and totally individual.
